Amortization: It is the process through which the enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase converts testosterone to Dihydro testosteroneor (DTH) which is the hormone responsible for causing Androgenetic Alopecia.

Anagen: Anagen is the first among the three phases in the growth cycle of hair follicles. This active phase of hair growth, when hair cells divide rapidly adding to the hair shaft, can last from 2 to 6 years.

Anagen Effluvium: Sudden loss of hair when the hair growth cycle is in the anagen phase. This type of loss occurs when there is sufficient injury in the rapidly dividing hair cells resulting in a thin and fragile hair shaft that is prone to fracture and removal as it reaches the skin surface. Generally such a hair loss happens as a result of certain types of Chemotherapy or Radiation treatment which in most cases is temporary in nature and hair grows back once the therapy is complete.

Androgen: Popularly known as ‘male hormone’, androgen is actually present in both male and female body. Apart from a whole lot of other activities, the main androgenic hormone Testosterone controls the growth of hair in pubic and underarm areas. Any imbalance in the level of Androgen in human body thus creates hair growth disorder such as growth of hair in inappropriate areas and hair loss.

Anterior: Front part.

Antiandrogen: A pacifying agent which is used to treat hair loss or inappropriate hair growth resulting from an imbalance in the androgen level in human body.

Aromatase: Found in estrogen-producing cells, it is an enzyme that acts as a catalyst in the conversion process of androgen to estrogen.

Autograft: A graft of tissue from one point to another of the same individual’s body.

Azelaic Acid: Azelic Acid prevents the activity of 5-alpha-reductase in human skin thus preventing hair loss and stimulating hair regrowth.

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) : A condition almost exclusively related to aging in man in which an enlargement of the prostrate gland occurs resulting in irregular flow of urine. Drugs like Dutasteride and finasteride , which are used to treat BPH are also known to prevent male pattern baldness.

Biopsy: Coined in French from Greek bios ‘life’ + opsis ’sight’ , biopsy is an examination of tissue taken from the body, to discover the presence, cause, or extent of a disease.

Bonding: Bonding is a hair remedial procedure in which a hairpiece is held to the scalp using glue or clips.

Catagen: Catagen is the transitional phase that follows the anagen in the growth cycle of hair. During this period, which lasts about one or two weeks, the hair follicle shrinks, the dermal papilla breaks away and goes into hibernation.

Chemotherapy: The treatment of disease, especially cancer by the use of chemical substances. The chemicals used in such therapy are highly toxic, which almost always results in short-term alopecia universalis.
